# Configuration

> Everything you can configure on a self-hosted Formbricks instance, and where each setting lives.

A fresh instance runs with sensible defaults. Everything below is optional, and most of it is a matter of adding environment variables and restarting your containers.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Almost every setting on this page is an environment variable. [Environment
> Variables](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/environment-variables.md) is the full list, and the page to read
> first.

## Getting mail out

Formbricks sends verification mail, invitations, email follow-ups and email surveys. None of that works until you point the instance at an SMTP server.

> **[SMTP](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/smtp.md)**
>
> Point Formbricks at a mail server.

> **[Job Runner](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/job-runner.md)**
>
> Run the background worker that sends the mail and processes queued work.

## Reaching your instance

Where Formbricks lives on the network, and how browsers get to it.

> **[Domain Configuration](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/domain-configuration.md)**
>
> Set the public-facing URL your instance answers on.

> **[Custom SSL Certificate](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/custom-ssl.md)**
>
> Bring your own certificate to the One-Click setup.

> **[Custom Subpath](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/custom-subpath.md)**
>
> Serve Formbricks under a path prefix instead of a domain root.

> **[CDN](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/cdn.md)**
>
> Cache public traffic without serving stale survey assets after an upgrade.

## Storing what people upload

> **[File Uploads](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/file-uploads.md)**
>
> Configure storage for survey images, file-upload answers and workspace assets.

## Connecting an LLM

> **[AI Features](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/ai-features.md)**
>
> Point the instance at Qwen/vLLM, Google Cloud, Azure or Bedrock, and turn AI on for your organization.

## Keeping the instance healthy

> **[AuthZed Operations](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/authzed-operations.md)**
>
> Configure, monitor, back up and repair the SpiceDB authorization dependency.

> **[Rate Limiting](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/rate-limiting.md)**
>
> The limits Envoy and the application server apply, and how to tune them.

## Signing in

Out of the box people sign in with an email address and a password. Point the instance at your own identity provider instead and sign-in follows the rules you already enforce there.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Single Sign-On is part of the [Enterprise Edition](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/advanced/license.md) — every provider
> below, not only SAML. SAML additionally needs the `saml` entitlement on the licence.

> **[Authentication Behavior](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/auth-behavior.md)**
>
> Who may sign up, and whether an invitation is required.

> **[Open ID Connect](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/auth-sso/open-id-connect.md)**
>
> The generic OIDC setup. Start here if your provider is not listed separately.

> **[Keycloak OIDC](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/auth-sso/keycloak-oidc.md)**
>
> OIDC against a Keycloak realm.

> **[Azure AD OAuth](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/auth-sso/azure-ad-oauth.md)**
>
> Microsoft Entra ID, formerly Azure AD.

> **[Google OAuth](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/auth-sso/google-oauth.md)**
>
> Google Workspace accounts.

> **[SAML SSO](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/auth-sso/saml-sso.md)**
>
> SAML 2.0, for providers that do not speak OIDC.

## Connecting third-party tools

[Airtable](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/integrations/airtable.md), [Google Sheets](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/integrations/google-sheets.md), [Notion](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/integrations/notion.md) and [Slack](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/integrations/slack.md) each need an OAuth app you register with the service, and its credentials as environment variables. [n8n](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/integrations/n8n.md), [Zapier](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/integrations/zapier.md) and [ActivePieces](https://formbricks.com/docs/self-hosting/configuration/integrations/activepieces.md) connect the other way round, through a Formbricks API key, and need no server configuration at all.
